Translators Information:

Join us for AMTA 2010, the 9th biennial conference of the Association for Machine Translation in the Americas!  Since the early 1990s, AMTA has brought together users of translation tools with the developers and researchers who build them.

We offer registration rate discounts and program content specifically for ATA members. The program content on Sunday, October 31 (tutorials and workshops) and Monday, November 1 (main conference, first day) focuses on the interests of translators and those who work with them. • On-site registration $225

Come to the  FREE half-day MT Postediting Showcase where postediting practitioners will demonstrate the techniques and tools they use every day and answer your questions about them.

Full day community-of-interest workshops (Sunday, October 31 and Thursday, November 4)

At AMTA workshops, communities of interest gather to dynamically explore and advance the state of the practice on current topics.  Two workshops on Sunday, October 31 will interest working translators: “Collaborative Translation: Crowdsourcing and the Translator Perspective”; and “Developing, Updating, and Coordinating Terminologies, Dictionaries, and Lexicons for Terminological Consistency”.

  • Regular registration $185
  • On-site registration $215

Workshop registration – together with main conference registration (one day main conference registration counts!)

  • Early registration $75
  • Regular registration $105
  • On-site registration $135

Main Conference – Day 1 - Monday, November 1

The first day of the main conference focuses on topics of interest to translators.  There are three tracks so you can learn about Commercial MT users, Government MT users, and MT Research. Monday’s program also includes two keynote presentations from the ATA community: ATA president Nicholas Hartmann, and author and translator, Jost Zetzsche.

Balance of the AMTA Conference

We concentrated most of the content of interest to working translators at the beginning of the conference to make it easy for ATA attendees to participate. But there’s plenty more to stick around for if you can!

Day 2 – Tuesday, November 2

SDL recently purchased statistical MT software developer Language Weaver, so AMTA invited SDL CEO Mark Lancaster to speak about SDL’s MT strategy and how SDL sees the translation industry evolving.  The FREE Translation Technology Showcase is on Tuesday afternoon. This event is like ATA’s Expo, but instead of a sales event, the Showcase is an exhibit of tools that use MT to solve real problems, including translator support, “document exploitation” (bringing foreign language paper documents into English for routing), and near-real-time translation of foreign language broadcasts.

Day 3 – Wednesday, November 3 and Post Conference tutorial and workshop, Thursday, November 4

Day 3 of the main conference and the post-conference tutorial and workshop on Thursday, November 4, feature in-depth technical content.  We hope to see Language Technology Division enthusiasts there learning about research trends, or even learning how to build their own MT systems with open source software.
